Everybody loves talking about backups.
Nobody likes talking about restores.
Until they need one.
I am happy to announce that I’ll be speaking again this year at the DOAG Conference & Exhibition #DOAG2026 in Nuremberg, Germany.
Many of my past presentations focused on Oracle Enterprise Manager and monitoring, and related operational topics. This time, however, I’ve decided to focus on a topic that is fundamental to every database administrator: Recovery.
Over the years, I’ve talked a lot about backup strategies, retention policies, monitoring backup jobs, and making sure everything runs according to plan.
But when a real problem occurs, everything changes.
Suddenly, the question is no longer “Do we have a backup?” but more:
“What exactly happened, and what is the best way to recover from it?”
A deleted table, unwanted data changes, logical corruption, user errors, lost files, or even a complete system failure can all require very different approaches. Sometimes a restore is the right answer. Sometimes it isn’t. And sometimes there is a much better option available.
That’s the motivation behind my presentation:
“Backup? Hab ich! Und was ist mit Restore?“
My goal is not to present a perfect solution or promote a specific tool.
Instead, I want to provide an overview of common recovery situations and discuss the different options available when things go wrong.
Successful recovery is often less about knowing specific commands and more about knowing the available choices.
